Building Resilience in Children and Teens
Resilience is not about avoiding stress—it’s about learning how to cope, adapt, and recover when challenges arise. With the right support, children and teens can build emotional strength that lasts a lifetime.

What Resilience Really Means
Resilience is the ability to navigate challenges, manage stress, and recover from difficult experiences. It does not mean a child never struggles or feels upset. Instead, it means they are able to move through those experiences without becoming overwhelmed or stuck.
For children and teens, resilience develops over time through relationships, experiences, and learned coping skills. It is not something they are simply born with—it is built.
How Children and Teens Learn Resilience
Children learn resilience primarily through their environment and the adults around them. When they are supported through difficult emotions, they begin to understand that challenges are manageable.
Experiencing safe struggles—like frustration with schoolwork, conflict with peers, or disappointment—also helps build resilience. These moments give children the opportunity to practice problem-solving and emotional regulation.
Teens, in particular, begin developing independence, identity, and decision-making skills during this stage. Support during this time is especially important as they navigate increasing social and academic pressure.
What Can Get in the Way
Resilience can be impacted when children or teens feel overwhelmed for long periods without adequate support. High stress, frequent conflict, or lack of emotional validation can make it harder for them to develop coping skills.
Avoiding challenges altogether can also limit growth. While protecting children from stress is natural, removing all difficulty can unintentionally reduce opportunities for learning how to cope.
On the other hand, too much pressure without support can also lead to anxiety, withdrawal, or low confidence.
How Parents and Caregivers Can Help
One of the most important ways adults support resilience is by providing emotional safety. When children feel secure and understood, they are more willing to face challenges.
Encouraging problem-solving instead of immediately fixing problems for them helps build independence. Asking questions like “What do you think might help?” can support critical thinking and confidence.
Modeling calm responses to stress also teaches children how to regulate their own emotions. Children often learn more from what adults do than what they are told.
Skills That Build Emotional Strength
Resilience is supported by several key skills, including emotional awareness, flexibility in thinking, and coping strategies for stress. Helping children name their emotions is an important first step in building these skills.
Teaching grounding techniques, deep breathing, or taking breaks during stressful moments can also be helpful. Over time, these strategies become tools children can use independently.
Positive relationships are another major factor. Feeling connected to at least one supportive adult significantly increases a child’s ability to cope with challenges.
When Extra Support May Be Needed
Some children and teens struggle with stress more intensely or consistently than others. If difficulties begin to affect school performance, relationships, or daily functioning, additional support may be helpful.
Therapy can provide a space to build emotional regulation skills, process difficult experiences, and strengthen coping abilities. It can also help families better understand how to support their child’s unique needs.
With guidance and consistency, resilience can be strengthened, helping children and teens face life’s challenges with greater confidence and stability.
